Thandu Mariamman Temple

Thandu Mariamman Temple, situated at Uppilipalayam on Avinashi Road, Coimbatore, is one of the city's important and historic Amman temples. The temple is traditionally believed to be more than 300 years old.

The Origin of Thandu Mariamman
According to the temple's traditional legend, the story goes back to the period of Tipu Sultan and the movement of his soldiers through the Coimbatore region.

A soldier in Tipu Sultan's army was a devoted worshipper of Goddess Parvati. One night, the Goddess appeared to him in a dream and revealed that she was present in a particular place in the forest. She instructed him to find her and establish a place of worship.

The next morning, the soldier went in search of the place shown in his dream. He eventually found the deity near a neem tree. Overjoyed at discovering the Goddess, he informed his fellow soldiers and, with their help, established a small shrine there.

The original shrine is believed to have been a simple hut. Over generations, the small shrine developed into the present temple.

Why is She Called "Thandu" Mariamman?
There are traditional explanations for the name Thandu Mariamman.

The Tamil expression "thandu irakkudhal" refers to soldiers setting up a camp during military expeditions. Historical accounts suggest that soldiers travelling through the region may have established a camp in the area where the temple stands today. Because of this association with a military camp, the Goddess came to be known as Thandu Mariamman.

Another popular devotional tradition connects the Goddess with the healing of diseases such as smallpox/chickenpox, an important aspect of Mariamman worship in Tamil Nadu.

From Forest Shrine to Temple
The area around present-day Coimbatore was very different centuries ago. Local historical accounts describe parts of the region around the old settlement as being surrounded by groves and wetlands.

The place where the Goddess was found was believed to have been relatively elevated, making it suitable for the soldiers to establish their camp and shrine. Over time, the settlement expanded, and the simple shrine developed into an important temple.

Thus, the history of Thandu Mariamman Temple is closely connected with the transformation of Coimbatore from an older settlement into the large city it is today.
