Ranchhodraiji Temple

Ranchhodraiji Temple is a major Krishna shrine in Dakor, Kheda district, Gujarat. The presiding deity, Ranchhodraiji, is Krishna worshipped as the one who left the battlefield, a name associated with his role in the story of the conflict with Jarasandha. The temple is one of central Gujarat’s most important pilgrimage destinations and draws devotees from across the state. Dakor itself developed as a sacred town, and the temple stands at the centre of its religious, commercial and festival life.

The temple’s official history tells how the image of Ranchhodraiji came to Dakor through the devotion of Bodana, a Krishna devotee from the village. According to the tradition, Krishna was moved by Bodana’s devotion and accompanied him to Dakor, where the image became the focus of worship. This is the shrine’s sacred narrative rather than a conventional building history, but it is central to how devotees understand the deity’s relationship with the town. The official temple site also records grants and patronage from Maratha and Gaekwad rulers, reflecting Dakor’s growing status as a pilgrimage centre.

The present temple is an important example of regional Hindu architecture and forms the focal point of Dakor’s old town. The sanctum houses Ranchhodraiji, while a separate temple to Lakshmi stands outside the main complex. Daily darshan and offerings are central to the temple’s routine, and the temple follows a carefully structured schedule of worship. Purnima days are especially important, with large numbers of devotees visiting on the full moon. The annual Faguni Poonam fair is one of the best-known gatherings, attracting pilgrims who walk or travel to Dakor to honour Krishna.

The temple is managed by an established committee and receives a large flow of pilgrims, particularly during festivals. Visitors should check current darshan hours, crowd arrangements and rules on photography before travelling. The sanctum is an active ritual space, so respectful dress and behaviour are expected. Dakor’s streets and markets around the temple form part of the pilgrimage experience, offering devotional goods and food associated with the town.

Ranchhodraiji Temple is significant as a major centre of Krishna worship, as a place shaped by a strong local bhakti narrative and as the religious heart of Dakor. Its Purnima gatherings and Faguni Poonam fair make it a major destination in Gujarat’s pilgrimage calendar. The temple’s importance comes from continuing darshan and worship as much as from its architecture or royal patronage, and it remains one of the defining sacred sites of central Gujarat.
