Koodalmanikyam Sree Bharathan Temple

Koodalmanikyam Temple in Irinjalakuda, Thrissur district, Kerala, is a major shrine dedicated to Bharata, the brother of Lord Rama. It is one of the four temples in the Nalambalam pilgrimage circuit, along with the Rama, Lakshmana and Shatrughna shrines at Thriprayar, Moozhikkulam and Payammal. The temple is unique because Bharata is the central deity, making it one of the few major temples in India devoted to him.

The temple’s origin is explained through a local legend about four idols that washed ashore. A chieftain named Vakkay Kaimal is said to have received a dream directing him to consecrate the images at four different places, giving rise to the Nalambalam circuit. The Koodalmanikyam deity is worshipped as Bharata, remembered for his loyalty to Rama and his refusal to rule Ayodhya in his brother’s absence. This devotion gives the temple a distinctive moral and spiritual character.

The annual temple festival, held in the Malayalam month of Medam, is one of the largest in central Kerala. It lasts eleven days and includes processions, ritual music and offerings. The temple is also known for its distinctive customs, including the absence of subsidiary shrines to some common deities. Daily worship and the festival calendar are maintained by the Devaswom, and pilgrims visit throughout the year.

Koodalmanikyam is important not only for its unique deity but for its place in the Nalambalam pilgrimage, which many families undertake during Karkidakam. The circuit connects the four brothers and reflects the Ramayana tradition in Kerala’s devotional life. Visitors should check current festival dates and follow temple rules on dress, photography and access. The shrine remains a living centre of worship where Bharata’s devotion, the Nalambalam tradition and local temple culture come together.

The temple’s annual festival is held in Medam and is celebrated with several days of processions and traditional percussion. It is distinct from the large, portable-procession festivals of other Kerala shrines because the deity’s identity as Bharata is central to the observance. The temple is also associated with the Koodalmanikyam Devaswom, which maintains the ritual schedule and facilities. Pilgrims who undertake the Nalambalam circuit often complete all four temples within a single day, following a long-standing family tradition during Karkidakam. The circuit links devotion to each brother with the larger Ramayana narrative.

The festival’s ceremonial culmination is a highlight of the temple year and draws devotees from across Thrissur district.

The Devaswom’s administration ensures that the temple’s rituals and festival arrangements are maintained each year.
