Chowalloor Mahadeva Temple

Chowalloor Mahadeva Temple is a historic Shiva shrine near Guruvayur in Thrissur district, Kerala. It is dedicated to Lord Shiva, worshipped as Mahadeva, with Goddess Parvati also honoured in the temple. The shrine is considered one of Kerala’s important Shiva temples and is included in the traditional list of 108 Shiva temples. It is also one of the group of Shiva temples around Guruvayur, making it a natural part of the pilgrimage route followed by devotees visiting the famous Krishna temple.

Local tradition attributes the installation of the deity to sage Parashurama, a figure associated with the establishment of many sacred places in Kerala. Such narratives are part of the temple’s inherited religious history and should be understood as sacred tradition rather than archaeological dating. The temple follows the Kerala style of architecture, with the sanctum and surrounding structures arranged to support ritual worship. Its west-facing Shiva image is a distinctive feature noted in local descriptions.

Daily puja and offerings continue throughout the year. Maha Shivaratri is the principal annual festival, drawing worshippers from Guruvayur, Thrissur and neighbouring districts. Mondays, Pradosham and the month of Shravan are also important periods for Shiva devotees. Pilgrims often include Chowalloor in a wider visit to the temples around Guruvayur, but the shrine has its own worshipping community and festival calendar.

Visitors should follow local rules on dress, footwear, photography and access to the inner temple. The temple may be especially busy during Maha Shivaratri and the Guruvayur festival seasons. Chowalloor Mahadeva Temple is significant because of its active Shaiva worship, its traditional inclusion among Kerala’s 108 Shiva shrines and its place within the sacred landscape around Guruvayur. It offers pilgrims an opportunity to worship Mahadeva in a setting that complements, but is distinct from, the neighbouring Krishna shrine.

Chowalloor is one of the Shiva shrines traditionally visited by pilgrims who come to Guruvayur, and it is commonly included with other local Mahadeva temples in a regional circuit. The temple is known for its Kerala-style architecture and ritual spaces, which support daily puja and annual observances. The west-facing image of Shiva is a notable local feature. Devotees may combine darshan here with a visit to Guruvayur, but the two temples have separate ritual calendars and customs. Visitors should check locally for the current Maha Shivaratri program.

Its proximity to Guruvayur makes the temple accessible, but worship at Chowalloor follows its own distinct practices.

The annual observances are maintained by the temple’s local worshipping community.
