Alarnath Temple

Alarnath Temple is a Vishnu shrine at Brahmagiri in Puri district, Odisha, about twenty-five kilometres from Puri. The presiding deity, Alarnath, is worshipped as a form of Vishnu and is closely associated with the Jagannath tradition. The temple is best known for its special role during Anavasara, the period after the Snana Yatra when the deities of the Jagannath Temple are not available for public darshan. During this interval, devotees travel to Brahmagiri to worship Alarnath, believing that Jagannath is present there in this form.

The shrine’s importance grew through the devotional life of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, who is said to have visited Alarnath during the Anavasara period in the sixteenth century. Puri district’s official tourism account notes that Chaitanya stayed at the temple in 1610 and explains the tradition that devotees unable to see Jagannath during the period of seclusion may receive blessings by visiting Alarnath. This connection has made the shrine an integral part of Puri’s wider sacred geography, particularly during the annual Jagannath cycle. The temple is not a substitute that displaces Jagannath; rather, it provides a meaningful devotional focus during a time when the main deities are resting from public darshan.

Alarnath Temple is dedicated to Vishnu and has an active ritual life throughout the year. Its most intense period is the fortnight of Anavasara, when large numbers of devotees come from Puri and surrounding areas. Offerings, prayer and darshan continue in a more concentrated atmosphere than at many ordinary times. The tradition of offering kheer is associated with the temple and its devotional culture. Visitors should be prepared for crowds during this period and should follow current instructions from temple staff and local authorities.

The temple’s historical age is often described in popular sources as predating the Jagannath Temple, but the precise chronology should be treated cautiously unless grounded in specific evidence. Its importance does not depend on a definitive construction date. The shrine is significant because of its continuing connection with Jagannath worship, its place in Chaitanya’s devotional memory and its role in the annual Anavasara pilgrimage. The Brahmagiri setting also gives visitors a quieter perspective on the sacred landscape around Puri.

Alarnath Temple is a living Vaishnava shrine and a key destination within Odisha’s Jagannath tradition. It brings together worship of Vishnu, the memory of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and the annual rhythm of Jagannath’s rest period. Visitors can understand its significance by seeing how a regional temple becomes central to a much larger pilgrimage through ritual time, devotion and shared belief.
